Belleville is a city located in St. Clair County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 41,410. It is the county seat of St. Clair County6.

Geography Belleville is located at 38°31'18" North, 89°59'43" West (38.521567, -89.995208)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 49.2 km² (19.0 mi²). 48.8 km² (18.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.68% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 41,410 people, 17,603 households, and 10,420 families residing in the city. The population density is 848.2/km² (2,196.4/mi²). There are 19,142 housing units at an average density of 392.1/km² (1,015.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 81.51% White, 15.51% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 1.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 17,603 households out of which 28.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.0% are married couples living together, 13.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.8% are non-families. 35.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,979, and the median income for a family is $46,426. Males have a median income of $33,361 versus $25,375 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,990. 11.7% of the population and 9.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.2% are under the age of 18 and 9.3% are 65 or older.
