Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 14,906 people, 4,854 households, and 3,431 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,237.7/km² (3,206.2/mi²). There are 5,374 housing units at an average density of 446.2/km² (1,155.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 30.29% White, 50.68% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 9.70% from other races, and 8.93% from two or more races. 27.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,854 households out of which 39.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.9% are married couples living together, 22.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% are non-families. 23.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
