Beckham County, Oklahoma

Beckham County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 19,799. Its county seat is Sayre6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,342 km² (904 mi²). 2,336 km² (902 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 19,799 people, 7,356 households, and 5,002 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (22/mi²). There are 8,796 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.05% White, 5.55% African American, 2.58% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.24% from other races, and 2.16% from two or more races. 5.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,356 households out of which 32.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.80% are married couples living together, 10.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.00% are non-families. 28.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 29.60% from 25 to 44, 21.10% from 45 to 64, and 15.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 109.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 111.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,402, and the median income for a family is $34,315. Males have a median income of $26,387 versus $18,945 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,488. 18.20% of the population and 14.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.80% are under the age of 18 and 9.10% are 65 or older.
