Bayfield County, Wisconsin

Bayfield County is a county located in the State of Wisconsin. As of 2000, the population is 15,013. Its county seat is Washburn[?]6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,288 km² (2,042 mi²). 3,823 km² (1,476 mi²) of it is land and 1,464 km² (565 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 27.69% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 15,013 people, 6,207 households, and 4,276 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (10/mi²). There are 11,640 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.46% White, 0.13% African American, 9.39% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,207 households out of which 28.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.90% are married couples living together, 7.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.10% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 5.30% from 18 to 24, 25.20% from 25 to 44, 28.50% from 45 to 64, and 16.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 102.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.70 males.
