Bay Springs, Mississippi

Bay Springs is a city located in Jasper County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,097. It is located at the intersection of state highways 15 and 18. The area was settled in the 1880s by Joe Blankenship, who built the saw mill that became the town's industrial base. The city was incorporated about twenty years later after the arrival of railroads going through it.

Geography Bay Springs is located at 31°58'36" North, 89°16'46" West (31.976761, -89.279574)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 38.4 km² (14.8 mi²). 38.3 km² (14.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.20% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,097 people, 793 households, and 524 families residing in the city. The population density is 54.8/km² (142.0/mi²). There are 880 housing units at an average density of 23.0/km² (59.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 50.02% White, 49.64% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.29% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 793 households out of which 30.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.9% are married couples living together, 20.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% are non-families. 32.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 77.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $22,895, and the median income for a family is $30,938. Males have a median income of $31,806 versus $19,091 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,199. 28.8% of the population and 26.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 36.5% are under the age of 18 and 33.1% are 65 or older.
