The Battle of Scheveningen or the Battle of Texel (8 - 10 August 1653) in the First Anglo-Dutch War resulted from the victory of the Commonwealth of England fleet at the Battle of the Gabbard in June 1653. The English used their earlier victory to impose a blockade[?] on the coast of the Netherlands. Admiral Maarten Tromp responded by attacking the blockaders on 31 July 1653. In the ensuing battles of early August the English force defeated and killed Tromp (10 August 1653), but ultimately had to withdraw to refit.
