Bartholomew County, Indiana

Bartholomew County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 71,435. The county's county seat is Columbus, Indiana6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,060 km² (409 mi²). 1,054 km² (407 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.62% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 71,435 people, 27,936 households, and 20,058 families residing in the county. The population density is 68/km² (176/mi²). There are 29,853 housing units at an average density of 28/km² (73/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.17% White, 1.83% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.90% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.96% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 2.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 27,936 households out of which 33.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.60% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.50% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $44,184, and the median income for a family is $52,097. Males have a median income of $38,350 versus $24,652 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,536. 7.30% of the population and 5.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.20% are under the age of 18 and 7.90% are 65 or older.
