Barry County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 56,755. Its county seat is Hastings6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,494 km² (577 mi²). 1,440 km² (556 mi²) of it is land and 54 km² (21 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.60% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 56,755 people, 21,035 households, and 15,986 families residing in the county. The population density is 39/km² (102/mi²). There are 23,876 housing units at an average density of 17/km² (43/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.39% White, 0.24% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 1.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 21,035 households out of which 35.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.10% are married couples living together, 7.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.00% are non-families. 19.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.20% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $46,820, and the median income for a family is $51,794. Males have a median income of $38,991 versus $26,387 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,636. 5.50% of the population and 3.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 5.90% are under the age of 18 and 5.90% are 65 or older.
