Barren County, Kentucky

Barren County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 38,033. Its county seat is Glasgow, Kentucky6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,295 km² (500 mi²). 1,272 km² (491 mi²) of it is land and 23 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.79% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 38,033 people, 15,346 households, and 10,941 families residing in the county. The population density is 30/km² (78/mi²). There are 17,095 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (35/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.30% White, 4.09% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,346 households out of which 31.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 9.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 25.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 92.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,240, and the median income for a family is $37,231. Males have a median income of $29,860 versus $21,208 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,816. 15.60% of the population and 11.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.30% are under the age of 18 and 19.10% are 65 or older.
