Barnstable Town is a city located in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 47,821.

Geography Barnstable Town is located at 41°39'33" North, 70°21'11" West (41.659158, -70.353059)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 197.5 km² (76.2 mi²). 155.5 km² (60.0 mi²) of it is land and 42.0 km² (16.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 21.26% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 47,821 people, 19,626 households, and 13,012 families residing in the city. The population density is 307.5/km² (796.5/mi²). There are 25,018 housing units at an average density of 160.9/km² (416.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.85% White, 2.74% African American, 0.59% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.67% from other races, and 2.30% from two or more races. 1.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 19,626 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.4% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% are non-families. 27.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.0% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $46,811, and the median income for a family is $54,026. Males have a median income of $41,494 versus $30,442 for females. The per capita income for the city is $25,554. 8.8% of the population and 6.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.7% are under the age of 18 and 5.9% are 65 or older.
