Barbour County, Alabama

Barbour County, Alabama is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of James Barbour, who served as Governor of Virginia. As of 2000 the population is 29,038. Its county seat is Clayton.

History Barbour County was established on December 18, 1832.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,343 km² (905 mi²). 2,292 km² (885 mi²) of it is land and 51 km² (20 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.17% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 29,038 people, 10,409 households, and 7,390 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (33/mi²). There are 12,461 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 51.27% White, 46.32% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.91% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 1.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,409 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.90% are married couples living together, 19.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.00% are non-families. 26.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 9.30% from 18 to 24, 29.60% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 13.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 106.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $25,101, and the median income for a family is $31,877. Males have a median income of $28,441 versus $19,882 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,316. 26.80% of the population and 21.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 37.10% are under the age of 18 and 26.40% are 65 or older.
