Avon is a town located in Houston County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 466.

Geography Avon is located at 31°11'22" North, 85°16'45" West (31.189409, -85.279156)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.9 km² (2.7 mi²). 6.8 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.38% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 466 people, 185 households, and 138 families residing in the town. The population density is 68.4/km² (176.9/mi²). There are 202 housing units at an average density of 29.7/km² (76.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.42% White, 4.29% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 0.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 185 households out of which 36.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.1% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.9% are non-families. 21.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,679, and the median income for a family is $42,273. Males have a median income of $28,438 versus $18,068 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,152. 12.4% of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.9% are under the age of 18 and 4.3% are 65 or older.
