Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,106 km² (427 mi²). 1,099 km² (424 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.58% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 52,523 people, 19,524 households, and 14,018 families residing in the county. The population density is 48/km² (124/mi²). There are 20,832 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (49/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.54% White, 0.81% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 19,524 households out of which 32.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.50% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
