Arkansas County, Arkansas

Arkansas County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 20,749. The county has two county seats, De Witt and Stuttgart.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,678 km² (1,034 mi²). 2,560 km² (988 mi²) of it is land and 117 km² (45 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.38% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 20,749 people, 8,457 households, and 5,970 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (21/mi²). There are 9,672 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.19% White, 23.36% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. 0.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,457 households out of which 31.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% are married couples living together, 13.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.40% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 24.40% from 45 to 64, and 16.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 90.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,316, and the median income for a family is $36,472. Males have a median income of $28,914 versus $21,127 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,401. 17.80% of the population and 14.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.80% are under the age of 18 and 15.50% are 65 or older.
