Archegonium

An archegonium (plural archegonia) is an organ of the gametophyte generation of a plant responsible for producing the ovum. Archegonia may be observed in seedless plants, but in seed-bearing plants (gymnosperms[?] and angiosperms), they are reduced and virtually nonexistent. The corresponding male organ is called the antheridium[?].
