Appanoose County, Iowa

Appanoose County is a county located in the U.S. State of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 13,721. Its county seat is Centerville, Iowa6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,337 km² (516 mi²). 1,285 km² (496 mi²) of it is land and 52 km² (20 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.89% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 13,721 people, 5,779 households, and 3,802 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (28/mi²). There are 6,697 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.16% White, 0.42% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,779 households out of which 28.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.10% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.20% are non-families. 29.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 20.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 91.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,612, and the median income for a family is $35,980. Males have a median income of $27,449 versus $20,452 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,644. 14.50% of the population and 10.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.00% are under the age of 18 and 14.10% are 65 or older.
