Anson County, North Carolina

Anson County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 25,275. Its county seat is Wadesboro6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,391 km² (537 mi²). 1,377 km² (532 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.04% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 25,275 people, 9,204 households, and 6,663 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (48/mi²). There are 10,221 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 49.53% White, 48.64% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 0.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,204 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.80% are married couples living together, 19.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.60% are non-families. 25.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,849, and the median income for a family is $35,870. Males have a median income of $27,297 versus $20,537 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,853. 17.80% of the population and 15.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 23.90% are under the age of 18 and 16.70% are 65 or older.
