Anderson is a city located in Anderson County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 25,514. It is the county seat of Anderson County6.

Geography Anderson is located at 34°30'52" North, 82°38'56" West (34.514506, -82.648944)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.9 km² (13.9 mi²). 35.8 km² (13.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.07% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 25,514 people, 10,641 households, and 6,299 families residing in the city. The population density is 711.8/km² (1,843.7/mi²). There are 12,068 housing units at an average density of 336.7/km² (872.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 63.12% White, 34.01% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 1.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,641 households out of which 25.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.9% are married couples living together, 18.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.8% are non-families. 36.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 82.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $27,716, and the median income for a family is $39,176. Males have a median income of $29,829 versus $21,840 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,577. 20.8% of the population and 15.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 30.4% are under the age of 18 and 18.2% are 65 or older.
