In
Egyptian mythology,
Ammit ("devourer of the dead") was a female
demon, part
cat,
hippopotamus and
crocodile.
Ammit lived under the Scales of Justice in Duat, the underworld. When Osiris weighed the soul of a person against a feather from the headband of Ma'at, the goddess of truth, Ammit, along with Babi, devoured those souls which weighed more (i.e. had too much sin), while the rest were allowed to enter heaven, Aaru.
Alternative: Ammut, Ahemait
