Amador County, California

Amador County is a county located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. As of the 2000 census, the population was 35,100. The county seat is Jackson.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,566 km² (605 mi²). 1,536 km² (593 mi²) of it is land and 30 km² (12 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.94% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 35,100 people, 12,759 households, and 9,071 families residing in the county. The population density is 23/km² (59/mi²). There are 15,035 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 85.79% White, 3.87% African American, 1.78% Native American, 1.00% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 5.04% from other races, and 2.41% from two or more races. 8.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,759 households out of which 26.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.90% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.90% are non-families. 23.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.81.

In the county the population is spread out with 20.60% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 28.30% from 45 to 64, and 18.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 122.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 123.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $42,280, and the median income for a family is $51,226. Males have a median income of $39,697 versus $28,850 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,412. 9.20% of the population and 6.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.10% are under the age of 18 and 5.40% are 65 or older.

Cities and Towns

Amador County bills itself as "The Heart of the Mother Lode[?]". There is a substantial wine-growing industry in the county.
