Alton, Texas

Alton is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,384.

Geography Alton is located at 26°17'4" North, 98°18'21" West (26.284307, -98.305940)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²). 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,384 people, 1,059 households, and 988 families residing in the city. The population density is 802.2/km² (2,075.5/mi²). There are 1,175 housing units at an average density of 215.0/km² (556.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 79.33% White, 0.05% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 19.02% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 97.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,059 households out of which 58.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.7% are married couples living together, 17.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 6.7% are non-families. 6.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.14 and the average family size is 4.29.

In the city the population is spread out with 37.9% under the age of 18, 12.1% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 14.7% from 45 to 64, and 6.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $22,097, and the median income for a family is $23,563. Males have a median income of $18,487 versus $15,341 for females. The per capita income for the city is $6,230. 42.7% of the population and 38.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 51.9% are under the age of 18 and 39.3% are 65 or older.
