Alpine County, California

Alpine County is California's smallest county, population-wise. As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 1,208. There are no incorporated places in the county. The county seat is Markleeville.

Alpine County is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,925 km² (743 mi²). 1,913 km² (739 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.61% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,208 people, 483 households, and 295 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 1,514 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.68% White, 0.58% African American, 18.87% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.41% from other races, and 5.05% from two or more races. 7.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 483 households out of which 25.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.90% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.90% are non-families. 27.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.80% under the age of 18, 10.40% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 29.30% from 45 to 64, and 9.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 110.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 117.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $41,875, and the median income for a family is $50,250. Males have a median income of $36,544 versus $25,800 for females. The per capita income for the county is $24,431. 19.50% of the population and 12.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.40% are under the age of 18 and 10.10% are 65 or older.
