Alma, Wisconsin

Alma is a town located in Jackson County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 983. It is the county seat of Buffalo County6.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 150.1 km² (58.0 mi²). 150.1 km² (57.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.05% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 983 people, 344 households, and 265 families residing in the town. The population density is 6.6/km² (17.0/mi²). There are 393 housing units at an average density of 2.6/km² (6.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.35% White, 0.00% African American, 1.42% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 6.71% from other races, and 0.31% from two or more races. 7.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 344 households out of which 38.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.1% are married couples living together, 5.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.7% are non-families. 18.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 116.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 121.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,000, and the median income for a family is $41,979. Males have a median income of $27,260 versus $21,078 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,602. 8.1% of the population and 2.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.5% are under the age of 18 and 1.9% are 65 or older.
