Alger County, Michigan

Alger County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 9,862. Its county seat is Munising6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 13,077 km² (5,049 mi²). 2,377 km² (918 mi²) of it is land and 10,700 km² (4,131 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 81.82% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,862 people, 3,785 households, and 2,585 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (11/mi²). There are 5,964 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.81% White, 6.11% African American, 3.30% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 2.03% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,785 households out of which 27.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% are married couples living together, 7.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.70% are non-families. 26.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the county the population is spread out with 20.50% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 26.30% from 45 to 64, and 17.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 116.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 120.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,892, and the median income for a family is $42,017. Males have a median income of $37,681 versus $24,492 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,210. 10.30% of the population and 7.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.70% are under the age of 18 and 8.10% are 65 or older.
