Alexandria, Alabama

Alexandria is a town located in Calhoun County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 3,692.

Geography Alexandria is located at 33°45'57.859" North, 85°53'3.800" West (33.766072, -85.884389).

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.7 km² (11.1 mi²). 28.7 km² (11.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,692 people, 1,397 households, and 1,082 families residing in the town. The population density is 128.4/km² (332.8/mi²). There are 1,467 housing units at an average density of 51.0/km² (132.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 88.43% White, 9.75% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,397 households out of which 39.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.5% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% are non-families. 19.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $40,761, and the median income for a family is $44,953. Males have a median income of $32,554 versus $22,754 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,313. 10.8% of the population and 8.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.4% are under the age of 18 and 4.3% are 65 or older.
