Alcona County, Michigan

Alcona County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 11,719. Its county seat is Harrisville6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,637 km² (1,791 mi²). 1,747 km² (674 mi²) of it is land and 2,891 km² (1,116 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 62.33% water.

Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,719 people, 5,132 households, and 3,566 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (17/mi²). There are 10,584 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.04% White, 0.16% African American, 0.62% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,132 households out of which 20.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.10% are married couples living together, 5.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.50% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.67.

In the county the population is spread out with 19.00% under the age of 18, 4.60% from 18 to 24, 20.90% from 25 to 44, 31.00% from 45 to 64, and 24.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 49 years. For every 100 females there are 102.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,362, and the median income for a family is $35,669. Males have a median income of $29,712 versus $20,566 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,653. 12.60% of the population and 9.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.80% are under the age of 18 and 9.00% are 65 or older.
