Alamo is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,760.

Geography Alamo is located at 26°11'6" North, 98°7'4" West (26.185113, -98.117892)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.8 km² (5.7 mi²). 14.8 km² (5.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,760 people, 4,621 households, and 3,826 families residing in the city. The population density is 996.3/km² (2,580.8/mi²). There are 6,208 housing units at an average density of 419.0/km² (1,085.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 83.61% White, 0.21% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 13.73% from other races, and 1.94% from two or more races. 78.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,621 households out of which 36.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.2% are married couples living together, 13.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.2% are non-families. 15.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.19 and the average family size is 3.57.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $23,928, and the median income for a family is $24,827. Males have a median income of $17,476 versus $14,683 for females. The per capita income for the city is $10,564. 32.4% of the population and 24.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 48.0% are under the age of 18 and 12.9% are 65 or older.
