Akiak is a city located in Bethel Census Area, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 309.

Geography Akiak is located at 60°54'36" North, 161°13'6" West (60.910082, -161.218282)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.9 km² (3.1 mi²). 5.1 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is land and 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 35.62% water.

Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 309 people, 69 households, and 54 families residing in the city. The population density is 60.6/km² (157.2/mi²). There are 76 housing units at an average density of 14.9/km² (38.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 4.85% White, 0.00% African American, 92.88% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 2.27% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 69 households out of which 53.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% are married couples living together, 20.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.7% are non-families. 18.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.48 and the average family size is 5.24.

In the city the population is spread out with 43.4% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 14.6% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 21 years. For every 100 females there are 122.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,250, and the median income for a family is $36,875. Males have a median income of $21,875 versus $11,667 for females. The per capita income for the city is $8,326. 33.9% of the population and 25.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 40.3% are under the age of 18 and 6.7% are 65 or older.
