Adams County, Pennsylvania

Adams County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 91,292. Its name is in honor of the second President of the United States of America, John Adams. Its county seat is Gettysburg6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,351 km² (522 mi²). 1,347 km² (520 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.29% water.

Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 91,292 people, 33,652 households, and 24,767 families residing in the county. The population density is 68/km² (176/mi²). There are 35,831 housing units at an average density of 27/km² (69/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.39% White, 1.21% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.71% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 3.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 33,652 households out of which 33.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.10% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 21.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.80 males.
