Adams County, Indiana

Adams County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 33,625. Its name is in honor of the sixth President of the United States of America, John Quincy Adams. The county's county seat is Decatur, Indiana6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 880 km² (340 mi²). 879 km² (339 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water.

Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,625 people, 11,818 households, and 8,662 families residing in the county. The population density is 38/km² (99/mi²). There are 12,404 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (37/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.31% White, 0.14% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.47% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 3.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,818 households out of which 37.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.70% are married couples living together, 8.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.70% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.37.

In the county the population is spread out with 31.10% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 20.10% from 45 to 64, and 13.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,625, and the median income for a family is $46,749. Males have a median income of $32,332 versus $23,119 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,704. 9.10% of the population and 6.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.90% are under the age of 18 and 8.60% are 65 or older.
