Accomack County, Virginia

Accomack County is a county located in the U.S. State of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 38,305. Its county seat is Accomac6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,393 km² (1,310 mi²). 1,179 km² (455 mi²) of it is land and 2,214 km² (855 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 65.25% water.

Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 38,305 people, 15,299 households, and 10,388 families residing in the county. The population density is 32/km² (84/mi²). There are 19,550 housing units at an average density of 17/km² (43/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 63.38% White, 31.56% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 3.57% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 5.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,299 households out of which 28.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.20% are married couples living together, 14.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.10% are non-families. 27.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.30% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 24.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,250, and the median income for a family is $34,821. Males have a median income of $27,078 versus $19,590 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,309. 18.00% of the population and 13.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.20% are under the age of 18 and 15.30% are 65 or older.
