Abingdon is a town located in Washington County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,780. It is the county seat of Washington County6.

Geography Abingdon is located at 36°42'35" North, 81°58'32" West (36.709773, -81.975694)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 21.6 km² (8.3 mi²). 21.6 km² (8.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,780 people, 3,522 households, and 2,092 families residing in the town. The population density is 360.2/km² (932.6/mi²). There are 3,788 housing units at an average density of 175.4/km² (454.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.99% White, 3.41% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,522 households out of which 23.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.6% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.6% are non-families. 36.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.08 and the average family size is 2.72.

In the town the population is spread out with 18.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 81.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $30,976, and the median income for a family is $46,106. Males have a median income of $32,005 versus $22,844 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,486. 10.1% of the population and 7.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.4% are under the age of 18 and 9.7% are 65 or older.
