Abbeville, South Carolina

Abbeville is a city located in Abbeville County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,840. It is the county seat of Abbeville County6.

Geography Abbeville is located at 34°10'43" North, 82°22'45" West (34.178572, -82.379200)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.2 km² (5.9 mi²). 15.2 km² (5.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,840 people, 2,396 households, and 1,574 families residing in the city. The population density is 384.1/km² (995.2/mi²). There are 2,654 housing units at an average density of 174.6/km² (452.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 50.46% White, 48.48% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,396 households out of which 30.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.1% are married couples living together, 23.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% are non-families. 30.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 80.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 73.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $25,756, and the median income for a family is $30,040. Males have a median income of $28,339 versus $21,824 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,274. 19.8% of the population and 16.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.2% are under the age of 18 and 20.9% are 65 or older.
