Aalter is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Aalter proper, Bellem[?], Lotenhulle[?] and Poeke[?]. On January 1st, 2000 Aalter had a total population of 18,509 (9,241 males and 9,268 females). The total area is 82.37 km² which gives a population density of 224.71 inhabitants per km².
